Basic Requirements

The State Department now makes a distinction between an Intern Program and a Trainee Program.

The Internship Program is meant to give foreign nationals' experience in their areas of current or recent study through the lens of American culture and society.

Basic requirements for the Internship Program

 

You must prove that you are currently enrolled in a foreign post-secondary academic institution; or that you graduated from a like institution no more than 12 months prior to the date your internship begins.
You must have a sufficient grasp of the English language. This can be accomplished through signed documentation from an academic institution or English school; or we can conduct an in-person interview using videoconference, web camera, or a third person, such as a university career office or broker.
You must be able to provide adequate funds for the entire duration of your stay either through payment from an employer or personal funds. USArts requires at least $500 per month.
A passport valid for six months after the date of your intended return to home country.

Training Program

The Training Program is meant to deepen foreign nationals' understanding of American culture and society, while also building their skills in a certain occupational field using American methodologies.

Basic requirements for the Training Program

 

You must prove that you have a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution and that you have at least one year of prior related work experience; or that you have five years of pertinent work experience outside of the U.S.
You must have a sufficient grasp of the English language. This can be accomplished through signed documentation from an academic institution or English school; or we can conduct an in-person interview using videoconference, web camera, or a third person, such as a university career office or broker.
You must be able to provide adequate funds for the entire duration of your stay either through payment from an employer or personal funds. USArts requires at least $500 per month.
A passport valid for six months after the date of your intended return to home country.

Fees

Application Fee: $100. Payable when online application is approved.
Participation Fee:
Up to 6 Months: $945
7 to 18 Months: $1545
Participation Fee payable when training offer is received and approved by USArts and trainee.
Self-placements with offer letter approved by USArts are eligible for a $100.00 discount on the Participation Fee.

Health Insurance
It is a legal requirement that you must have Health Insurance for the entire duration of your training plus one additional month (30 days) after the expiry of your J1 visa. IA&A offers Health Insurance from $56.50-$94.50 per month depending on age. Participants are welcome to obtain their own health insurance but the policy must meet U.S. State Department regulations.
The cost of Health Insurance is not included in the Participation Fee.

Housing
Please note USArts is not responsible for your housing arrangements during your placement. We can offer suggestions for sources of housing and housing information, as well as advice on tenant rights, etc.




Submit Online Application

Please complete the online application under Application. Please answer all questions and include comments for any questions you have any difficulty answering.

You will receive an automatic email to confirm receipt of your application. Then within two to three business days you will receive our response on your online application.

If your online application is accepted, your next step will be to pay your USArts Application Fee of $100 by credit card. You will receive payment information by email if your USArts online application is accepted. Once your Application Fee is paid, your next step is to submit your supporting documents as listed in STEP 3.





Submit Supporting Documents
Your printed USArts online application (printed and signed PDF document) with signature of applicant or representative (If representative, please include lawyer’s official representation form)
Photocopy of passport
Letter from college/university Supervisor on official letterhead IF you do not have copies of your transcripts
Two handed-signed letters of recommendation, in the field of training requested, either academic or professional, depending on whether candidate is applying for INTERN or TRAINEE visa category. Letters must include the contact information of the reference issuing the letter. TRAINEE candidates must have at least one letter of recommendation providing proof of related work experience outside of the United States
2 passport sized photos
A bank statement along with a letter stating that you have sufficient funds for the duration of your program signed by a responsible parent/guardian who will act as guarantor. At least US$500 per month is considered a sufficient amount to live in the US in case the training placement is unpaid
Photocopy of university transcript stating degrees/diplomas or grades achieved to date
An essay (maximum 500 words) describing your interest in training in the US and reasons for applying. Essays must be typed and double-spaced
General cover letter ( please address to potential host, not USArts)
A one-page resume (CV) of education and employment history

Any documents not in English must be submitted with signed translations attached. Any applications submitted without necessary translations will be considered incomplete and will be returned to the sender.

Interview
Once USArts has received and accepted your completed application, we will schedule an interview with you.
Interviews can be completed three ways; in-person with a USArts career member in the Washington, DC office; through an approved broker, such as a University career center official and with a signed agreement; or with a Web camera. Click here for mroe information Web camera interviews.




USArts Arranges Training Placement
Once USArts has received and accepted your complete application, we will notify you within a day and then work to arrange your training placement, which takes on average of four to eight weeks. Upon receiving a training offer letter for you from a host, we will forward to you the offer letter and your invoice. See next step.




USArts issues Invoice/ submit Participation Fee
You will receive your invoice by fax or mail or scanned by email.

Participation Fees:

Up to 6-month placement: $945.00
7 to 18-month placement: $1545.00

You can complete fee payment by credit card by contacting your USArts case manager directly.

Health Insurance
J1 Trainees are required to have a minimum health plan for the duration of stay in the US plus a one-month grace period. Please provide proof of the following or ask about HTH Worldwide health coverage through USArts.
Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
Repatriation of remains in the amount of $7,500
Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of the exchange visitor to his or her home country in the amount of $10,000
A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

Under Age 24: $62.20
Age 25-30: $82.00
Age 31-40: $104.00
Age 41-50: $175.00
Age 51-64: $256.00
Over Age 65: $494.00

USArts arranges DS-7002 form with host company

The DS7002 form is also called the Training/Internship Placement Plan. This is completed and signed by your host with our help and outlines the goals, activities and responsibilities for the intern/trainee's placement with the host.





USArts issues Training agreement for Host and Trainee
USArts has forms required by the Department of State that USArts will have the Host complete and sign. The Training Agreement provides details such as host information, trainee information, dates of training, location of training and brief description of training. The Training Plan is completed by your host with our help and outlines the goals, activities and responsibilities for the trainee's placement with the host.

Self-placements with offer letter approved by USArts are eligible for a $100.00 discount on the Participation Fee.





USArts issues DS2019 form
Once we have received the Training Agreement from the Host and from you signed as well as the completed payment, we will send you your DS2019 form necessary to complete your J1 trainee visa application, by express delivery. This should arrive at your mailing address within two to five working days.





Prepare J1 Intern/Trainee Visa application
Please refer to your US Consulate's website for instructions on preparing your J1 Trainee visa application, including paying the application fee and the I901 SEVIS fee. Please be sure also to follow instructions to arrange your US Consulate interview appointment. USArts staff can provide helpful information to understand these procedures and prepare the J1 trainee visa application.

Go to US Consular interview
Go to you US Consulate appointment with your complete visa application. The US Consulate should notify you at your interview if you will receive your visa or not.




Receive visa/schedule travel
If you are awarded a visa, you should receive your visa by express delivery in two to five business days.
